What does Confidence mean?
Confidence is another word used for self-esteem or self-worth. Self-worth is the confidence someone has in their worth and their abilities. Confidence can be one of the most important things that we learn to build because if we learn to build self-worth we in turn build confidence, self-love, self-respect, healthy relationships, motivation, among other things. This is the core to how we see ourselves in the world we live in.
Some symptoms of low confidence can present as:
- Anxiety (generalized and social)
- Feeling undeserving
- Relational struggles (avoidance or codependency)
- Not having relationships
- Feeling shy
- Needing others approval
- …Among other things…
We measure our worth in so many different ways:
- What we do
- What we are good at
- How many friends we have
- Following on social media
- What we look like
- How much money we make
- How far along we are in life
Each individual can find their worth in different things. The problem is each of those things are dependent on external factors. Most external factors are out of our control, so when it goes, so does our worth. Self-worth is about building a foundation of who we are internally, something no one can take away from us, so that when the world shakes we are still believing we are worthy.
How can therapy help with Confidence?
Therapy can help with confidence because it is a place where we can look at the deepest parts of who we are and still be loved regardless of how we see ourselves. Therapists at Courage to Connect are trained to help you understand the underlying beliefs that you carry around with yourself and they help you find ways to debunk those beliefs that hold you back from living a life filled with confidence, courage, and respect.
There can be so many experiences, people (relationships), and events that happened in your life that can be dictating the way that you see yourself now in the present and how you see your future. Therapy can help your rewrite that script from your past so that your present and future doesn’t have to be dictated by your past.
